Aghagower Round Tower, Aghagower, Co. Mayo, Ireland. Pen and Watercolor Original Painting.

Founded by St. Senach in the 7th Century this monastic site has its own leaning round tower.  Located in the townland Aghagower just outside Westport in Co. Mayo.

The round tower is 16m high without its roof, there are three theories as to why there was a round tower built here.

Could it possibly have housed a bell and was it used as a bell tower?

Was it used as a lookout post for when the Vikings used to raid Ireland?

Or was it just used as a symbol of show off and status.
