After being abandoned by the monks, the O'Madden Family took possession of the land and generously granted it to the Dominican Friars, who established the abbey in 1426, dedicating it to St Mary and Saints Peter and Paul. In the 18th century, the Friary underwent a transformation, being converted into a Protestant church.
