Exploring the History and Mystery of Delvin Castle, County Westmeath

Discovering Delvin Castle: A Hidden Gem in County Westmeath

Tucked away in the charming village of Delvin, County Westmeath, stands the remains of Delvin Castle, a historical treasure with deep roots in Ireland's medieval past. Built in 1181 by Hugh de Lacy, the first Lord of Meath, for his brother-in-law Sir Gilbert Nugent, this Norman stronghold once dominated the local landscape. The Nugent family, loyal supporters of William the Conqueror, were granted lands in Delvin, where they established their legacy. While the castle itself is not accessible to the public today, its towering ruins continue to fascinate visitors with their rich history and the eerie stories that linger in the surrounding village.
